Myvatn exchange, simply known as the X, is a hub for the exchange of resources, culture, and skills in the Skútustaðahreppur and Þingeyjarsveit regions of northern Iceland. The X is designed to be simple, flexible and useful, both for the local population of the Myvatn region as well as visitors from the booming tourism industry. Expanding on the concept of a circular economy, Myvatn X is a central hub for a circular society. The X invigorates the region’s economy while nourishing local Icelandic culture. The core programs are arranged around a central atrium, enclosed with a simple post and beam structure allowing for a high degree of flexibility. The building is designed to meet the shifting needs of the Myvatn region as they change over time. Combined with the simple structure, sliding doors allow spaces such as the depot to accommodate temporary events like a weekend farmers market or flea market. The simple structure and layout accommodate expansion with ease as additional space is needed in the future.
