Exploring the beauty of our everyday lives, Love x You is a temporary VIP Lounge designed for the 2023 Vancouver Interior Design Show. A space, an object, and a community experience, show goers were invited to attach a personalized love letter to the stretched fabric enclosure. Building up over the course of the weekend, these letters became a testament to the power of design in our everyday lives.
Created with two pieces of projection mesh suspended from a rigging truss, the unique geometry of the enclosure is generated by the elasticity of the fabric itself. Entries and openings are achieved by manipulating the anchor points of the mesh, further influencing the resultant form. Designed to create a distinct interior space, while offering views out to the show floor, the fabric is covered in a gradient of live Ivy; an invasive plant species removed from a local nature preserve, part of the decolonizing activities of the Tsleil-Waututh, an indigenous nation local to Vancouver, BC.
Assembled in the 3 days leading up to the show, the installation is designed with a limited kit of parts, intended to maximize social impact while minimizing its environmental burden. Focusing on circularity, the lifecycle of each material was specifically planned; the most significant material being the fabric, was donated to local theatre school, Arts Umbrella; where it will continue life in their youth focused productions.
The space became a catalyst for social connectivity at the show, demonstrating the power of architecture in building socially resilient communities. The 500+ letters shared messages of love, loss and hope, creating a shared experience, facilitated by the physical and experiential qualities of the space.
