Designed with Esk'etemc Elders and education staff, the Esk'etemc Child Care Centre is emblematic of the Nation's relationship with the four cardinal directions as milestones of childhood development. To Esk'etemc, life begins in the east where the spaces for the youngest children are situated. Child care spaces revolve around a central community hub, increasing in age group as the building revolves towards the west.
The central hub represents a drum, a key aspect of Esk'etemc culture and music, a central component of many community gatherings. The childcare centre is located next to the community school and offers a continuum of education as well as deeper intergenerational learning opportunities.
Atmospheric Perspective completed schematic design of this project, successfully supporting the Nation and project manager through the funding process.
